Behind Find Your Ikigai SG
Christopher Gordon
Founder of Find Your Ikigai SG |
While there are some youth who are extremely passionate and clear about where they are in headed in life and of the difference they want to make, there are also a good number who feel quite lost as to where they are headed. One of the key challenges of our generation is to empower each youth to write their personal success narrative (anchored on their unique talents/skills, passion and life purpose); empower them to live it out and pursue meaningful careers which are aligned to their personal success narrative.
In 2019, together with my wife Michele and our friends Shane, Shamantha and Humphrey, we launched the Find Your Ikigai SG programme, which was aimed at helping youth to identify their personal success narrative and to empower them to achieve it. The word “Ikigai” is a Japanese word which means “a reason for being” or “the things that make one’s life worthwhile”. The programme incorporates the use of non-traditional tools such as human library sharing, small – group life coaching and mindfulness meditation sessions to deepen the learning and personal growth of the youth and help them to achieve deeper realisations and to transform their lives. |
Ikigai
"become who you want to be"
The word “Ikigai” is the Japanese word that means a “reason for being” or “the things that make life worthwhile”. Ikigai (ick-ee-guy) is a Japanese concept which enables you to live a long, happy and fulfilled life through 4 elements: passion, mission, vocation and profession.
The approach
FYISG will run for 4-weeks (8 meetups) where you will craft your own Ikigai statement through sessions and group coaching. You will then be given a choice of embarking on the full 9-week personal leadership track (additional 5 weeks) where you will embark on a project to deepen your understanding and practice of your Ikigai statement!

I embarked on this programme because I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life and I thought to myself that joining the programme may provide me with insights to what I actually want. I think the programme really helped me to understand myself better. Through the programme, I managed to uncover strengths that I never knew of and I also learnt to be more intentional with my actions and thoughts. Even though I have yet to figure out what I want, I now have a clear idea on what I should be working on in order to figure that out.

As someone who has been drifting around in life, I spent a year being very confused about what is truly meaningful to me which warrants my attention to startup. Thus, I join FYISG to gain more clarity about my goals in life and work towards a project that can potentially be my future startup. This programme has helped me in understanding my strengths better as well as bringing into attention some weaknesses such as time management and figuring out ways how to improve on both my strengths and weaknesses.

I have always been in a cycle of wanting to make a change in my life but never acting on it. I decided to embark on this program as a way to ensure accountability in my actions and finally act on my passions and goals. Being a skeptic, I thought that joining this programme was not going to allow me to know for sure my purpose in life in just 10 weeks. Instead, I have grown to have greater clarity in my goals and actions and be more aware of my strengths and the way I think and act in my daily life. This has helped me go about my daily routines with more efficiency and direction.

When I first joined the programme, I was excited that there were people like me! Enthusiastic about improving themselves and making a difference. I was really happy to find a community of such people. I initially thought I was quite clear about what I wanted to do with my life, but writing it down and speaking to others helped me to find out more about myself and actually it made it a lot clearer. So I now have a more focused direction in life

At the end of it all–we have the power within us to change our lives. We have our brains, our hearts, we can move, to make small decisions and steps to slowly steer the direction our life is heading towards.
You can’t put a deadline to this journey of growth. The most important thing is to get started, even one step counts! It’s never too early to start and never too late to re-align, whenever, wherever you are in life!

I realised everyone has their own fears and challenges, and I am not alone with these thoughts. I never expected that spirituality to be so important to me. Never thought that my success factor differs from the societal one. I made so many aligned friends and I think this really saved my life.
