From Managing Tasks to Growing People

(A note on privacy: in line with PDPA, we're not able to disclose students' names or faces)

Every tertiary institution appoints student leaders. Far fewer have a plan for what happens after that. A student gets a title, a checklist of duties, and a vague hope that leadership will develop somewhere along the way. Most learn to execute a task reasonably well by the end of their term. Almost none are taught how to grow the person who takes over from them.

That's the gap one tertiary institution wanted to close: not just training leaders,
but building a pipeline where each cohort of leaders is equipped to develop the next.

What we built

Growthbeans partnered with the institution to design a leadership lifecycle: a pathway that moves student leaders from foundational management into advanced peer mentorship, rather than treating leadership as a single skill learned once and reused forever.

01

Doing

Task-oriented management. Checking work, assigning duties, keeping things on track.

02

Leading

Values-based decisions
and high-trust delegation. Team autonomy over micromanagement.

03

Mentoring

Coaching techniques
and powerful questioning,
guiding the growth of the
next generation.

Leaders were grounded first in values-based decision-making and high-trust delegation, the shift from checking work to trusting a team with real autonomy and psychological safety. As they progressed, they were equipped with coaching techniques and powerful questioning so they could guide the growth of the students coming up behind them, not just hand off a task list. Personalised leadership coaching, both individual and group, reinforced the pathway at every stage.

What changed for student leaders

Purposeful Leadership

A shift from a task-oriented "doing mindset" to a
values-based "leading " approach, prioritising
team empowerment
over micromanagement.

Emotional
Maturity

Personalised coaching bridged the gap between theory and real-world challenges, deepening self-awareness and decision making clarity

Mentorship Competency

By mastering coaching techniques and powerful questioning, student mentors became capable of guiding the growth of their successors

The mentorship piece is what made this more than a leadership workshop. Coaching techniques and powerful questioning are hard skills to fake, and mastering them meant these student leaders became genuinely capable of guiding someone else's growth, not just supervising their output. That's the difference between a leadership programme that ends when the term does, and one that keeps paying forward.

What students say

"I like the concreteness of the strategies and frameworks shared, and how they are modelled and guided for our understanding and application."

"For each topic covered, there was an activity to enrich learning and reflection to hone the skills."

"The coaching sessions got me to reframe my thinking and approach situations differently. They made me realise how tunnel vision-like my mindset was."

Why this matters to student development leads

Most leadership programmes are built to produce better task managers. This one was built to produce better mentors, which is the harder and more valuable outcome, because it's what makes a leadership pipeline self-sustaining instead of something you have to rebuild from scratch every cohort.

If your institution is looking for a leadership programme with staying power beyond a single term, this is the kind of pathway Growthbeans can design for your student leaders. Reach out and we can talk through what that could look like for your programme.
